Traveling with kids is always challenging in some ways, no matter how old they are. When it comes to flights and airports, it can be a daunting experience. Luckily, airport management usually realizes this and tries to make the airport stay more pleasant for little passengers.😊
The airport in Prague is a gateway to Czechia. Millions of people use it every year, and it connects to about 170 destinations. Is it a child-friendly gateway? Definitely YES.😊
We recently flew from Terminal 2 of Václav Havel Airport in Prague and checked out what is available for children. I prepared this little guide to help you know what to expect when traveling through Prague Airport with your little ones.
To keep children entertained, the airport has several children’s corners and play areas. Large climbers, slides, and interactive toys are available in both terminals.
In the public part of Terminal 2, between the check-in counters, there is a large world map on the floor where older kids can spend their time searching for destinations and estimating the time it takes to get there. Interactive boards for younger children can be found in some places among the counters. There is also a large display tower dedicated to the work of Václav Havel.
The same amenities are available once you pass security and reach the gate area. There are play areas and exhibits for kids.
In the public part on the ground floor (just after the arrival gates), there are other entertaining features like a big chess game and a Prague airport model made entirely from Lego. Imagine pressing a button and seeing some pieces move! There is also another ingenious masterpiece dedicated to Václav Havel: his portrait made entirely of everyday items used during his era.
If you have a plane lover in your family, you can spend hours there 😊. It is accessible in the public part of the departure hall. The planes are well visible, and there are even some pictures with interesting info about different types of planes.
Parents can use their own pushchairs until boarding or borrow one of the airport’s pushchairs for free. Prague Airport offers priority security checks for families with pushchairs. There are also high chairs at the security check so the baby can be buckled up safely while parents are picking up their belongings.
Changing tables are available in most women’s and men’s toilets throughout the airport.
There are drinking fountains with drinking water in front of many toilets. It is a good idea to take an empty bottle with you through security, and you can refill it afterwards.
Prague Airport offers special rooms designed for families. These rooms provide privacy and a quiet environment, equipped with changing stations, microwave ovens, baby cots, play areas, and en suite bathrooms. They are accessible in the area after the security check, and to find them, you just follow the signs—they are well marked. There is one such room in every terminal.
I asked about the airport in a group discussion dedicated to flying with kids, and these were the answers:
“The most child friendly airport I’ve ever seen so far hands down, at least in Europe. Plenty of play areas everywhere and also baby rooms with highchairs, microwave, etc. Good changing rooms, too.”
“Oh and free strollers. And there are even highchairs at the security check so you can safely buckle up your baby while you are picking up all your belongings.”
“It’s a tiny airport. Very easy to navigate. It has airport strollers to let the little ones rest! And they are super nice with the baby food water and liquids”
As a final point, I would like to share a few tips that work well for us when traveling by air with kids. They are just little details, but they can make a big difference.
1.) Tell the kids what to expect – We always talk about the upcoming holiday and flights, and what awaits us. The airport and flight preparation were a part of it, especially when the kids were younger. Knowing what to expect can reduce anxiety and make the experience smoother.
2.) Food and drink – It works everywhere, not only at the airport 😊. We usually have a proper meal in an airport restaurant before the flight, plus I have snacks in my bag that we can eat anytime (dried fruit, nuts, toasts, carrot and cucumber sticks, apples). I also allow the kids to pack some special treats in their bags, which gives them something to look forward to. As for water, we always have several refillable bottles with us. I empty them before the security check, but they can be refilled in the gate area.
3.) Comfortable clothes and a favorite fluffy toy – It is essential that kids feel comfortable in their clothes and have a fluffy friend they can talk to, show things to, and use as a pillow if needed 😊. Just be sure that this friend is not left behind somewhere because it would cause a looooot of trouble.
4.) Prepare things to play with while sitting – Small favorite toys, magazines, coloring books with pencils, books, and games. It should be something that doesn’t take up much space but can keep the kids entertained while seated. I always take something they like and something brand new, even if it’s just a magazine. Again, something to look forward to…
5.) Move as much as possible – Forget about priority boarding; make the kids move until the last moment. The later you get on the plane, the later they will have to sit still. There are usually some child-friendly facilities somewhere, so just use them. Even the most common things in the gate area before boarding will do.
Escalators or stairs can be a source of fun; you can count the planes, the gates, or search for colors. Kids can check from various windows to see what is happening at the airport, how many wagons of bags are coming to the plane, etc. Letting kids burn off some energy before boarding can make them more relaxed and ready to sit during the flight.
6.) Happy mum equals happy child – One thing is for sure: it will never go as expected, and your reactions will affect how smooth or stressful it will be. So, my most valuable advice is to just let it flow. Make sure that you, as a mum, are well-rested before the journey, eat well (allow some special treats for yourself too 😉), and allow plenty of time at the airport to manage everything. Let the kids explore this big airport world around them. If you are calm, the kids will feel it, and it will not be as daunting for either of you.
And that’s it 🙂 I wish you many happy flights with your kids. It doesn’t matter if it is from Prague or any other airport. Safe travels and happy adventures!
